Principal Software Engineer
Jawbone - December 2012 - December 2014
Lead Infrastructure team. We made shit not so shitty.
I came in through acquisition of Massive Health and built the team from the ground up, which eventually absorbed the Operations team, which was originally a part of the IT department.
We turned a brittle, monolithic, old-school application with a small number of users into a fully-modern, automated (deployment, configuration and testing), SOA system that scaled to big numbers (users and computers). The huge architectural changes we made were responsible for Jawbone's increased uptime, and hilariously, lead to the first Christmas morning without any service disruption. Turns out everyone turns on their shiny new electronic gifts at the same time, which leads to interesting traffic burst scenarios that are difficult to test.
Helped architect and build a system for computing real-time, streaming aggregations which is now the backbone of most of UP's smart content, personalized data analysis, and trends features.
